A confectioner in the United States is launching a special limited edition of hand-made “elephant chocolates” with proceeds from sales going to support efforts to conserve the engendered African elephants in Kenya.
The elephant chocolates made by L.A. Burdick Chocolate and available by mail order, will first hit the market on 4 April 2016 for residents of the cities of Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York City, and Walpole, New Hampshire. Chocolate lovers have until 31 August to savour the elephant chocolate.
According to the Blasting News website , the dark chocolate elephants will carry the uniquely African fruity taste of Marula combined with passion fruit. The Marula tree is found across Africa and elephants love it. South Africans managed to turn the vitamin C rich berry into a delicious cream liquor drink which is marketed under the name of Amarula.
The passion fruit flavour represents a piquant fruit that is grown in Kenya. White elephant chocolate will be orange-flavoured.
Five percent of proceeds from the sale of the edible elephants will be going directly to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The Trust is dedicated to the conservation of elephants and rhinos in East Africa. Its orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme is recognized as one of the finest in the world.
The Trust is deeply involved in anti-poaching activities, and their units operate in the Tsavo National Park, the Chyulu Hills National Park, and the Kibwezi Forest Reserve in Kenya.
