Nairobi, Sept 9 (Swara) – A new centre dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage of the Maasai Mara has opened its doors in Ngoswani, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about the ecosystem beyond its renowned wildlife and safari attractions.
The Mara Natural History Center officially opened on September 1, 2026, along the main road to Sekenani Gate, one of the principal entrances to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The centre is about a 30-minute drive south of the gate.
The facility is the first dedicated institution in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem where visitors can explore the region’s natural history, geography, wildlife and habitats alongside its human history, including ancient migration routes and Maasai heritage.
The opening ceremony was attended by 36 representatives from international and local organisations, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Narok County Government, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, local conservancies, community leaders, churches and primary schools.
The centre was founded by Simba Qiang Zhuo, Xiaoling Cao, Yong Liu and Simon Masago, with support from partners and individuals who contributed funding, resources, scientific expertise and field knowledge.
The Habitat Watcher Foundation played a central role in fundraising for the construction and development of the centre’s exhibitions. The founders also acknowledged philanthropic contributions from Dr Yin Ye and Mr Lu Shu, which they said were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.
The Mara Natural History Center is intended to provide safari visitors with a broader understanding of the landscape and the ecological and cultural values that underpin the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem.
The founders hope the centre will encourage visitors to deepen their appreciation of the Maasai Mara and support efforts to conserve the East African savanna and its wildlife habitats for future generations.
