NANYUKI, March 26 – The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said today that its rangers had joined a multiagency team that is fighting a fire that is raging in Lolldaiga Ranch in Laikipia County.
The team comprises of ground and aerial fire fighters, including staff from the ranch and private partners, KWS said in a press release.
The fire broke out on March 24 at a British army training camp located inside the expansive ranch. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
An initial assessment of the affected area was conducted by KWS Problem Animal Management Unit (PAMU) and a team of KWS officers from Umande Outpost on March 25 and no wildlife carcasses were found, contrary to some press reports that indicated that a number of elephants had died in the fire, KWS said, adding that the blaze had burned about 5,000 acres of the ranch.
Th Lolldaiga Hills Ranch is a 50,000-acre cattle ranch and wildlife conservancy situated about 20km northwest of Mount Kenya.
