The Kenyan population is rising rapidly while important natural resources such as forests that are crucial life support systems are threatened. The constitution stipulates that at least 10 percent of the country’s territory should be under forest cover, but only about 7 percent is forested.
There are five major water towers (Mt. Kenya, Aberdares, Mau Complex, Cherangani and Elgon) in Kenya that supply water to the entire population and sustain fragile ecosystems. The Mau Forest complex for instance supplies water beyond the Kenyan borders and is considered a biodiversity hotspot.
Unfortunately, despite that critical socio-economic and ecological functions, those ecosystems are under immense pressure from deforestation, encroachment and illegal logging…..
